Tips for Buying a Caravan Equipment

Unlike cars, caravans age superbly well and can be used normally for many more years. We therefore recommend buying our first caravan in the spot market.

Also, if we do not then use it like it or not we can sell it and get our money back.

I was more than a year to decide, and I read a lot of information online that helped me make a decision.

I hope these tips will serve someone .. start.

Buying a second hand caravan

The first thing to know is that there are two types of caravans : those weighing less than 750 kg and weigh more.

The first are considered as a light trailer, and do not need separate insurance ( use the car and must notify the company ) do not pay tax and not pass the ITV .

They are looking around the world and therefore tend to be expensive compared with their older sisters.

The weighing more than 750 kg need insurance, pass itv, bring own tuition and in some cases pay a road tax(depending on load capacity).

In addition if the sum of the weight of the car and the trailer exceeds 3500 kg’s necessary to take a special card (something likely if the caravan is very large)

Carnet permission or B is lifelong

Having decided the type of caravan, we must know how much weight can drag our car, which we know looking at the product sheet in the box MMR. To know what is the weight of the caravan must seek the MMA green box on the data sheet of the caravan. MMR should not exceed the car.

Here we must note that the caravan is the size and type that is it must have a green card technical inspection .It is illegal and punishable move without it.

They serve small chips, contracts or bills of sale or anything similar .

Having decided the size of the caravan (asegurandonos that can tow with our car), I found that having the right papers and has the necessary places for our family it’s time to see other details.

¿Bathroom yes or no?

An important detail is the bathroom , because although normally we will use the services of the campsite where we are, if we get up at midnight to urinate, have kids, or just want to wash our hands we will use it . It is also especially useful when going on the road, then we stopped and took the toilet with us (with children or women as men urinate anywhere).

There are two types of WC: portable and fixed the latter being the most comfortable since the warehouse where are the waste can be removed from the outside of the caravan and also has more capacity.

Fixed integrated toilet in the caravan and opening on the outside

Removing the toilet tank fixed on the outside of the caravan.

portable toilet installed under the sink caravan is common in small caravans or campers vehicles.

For more information see my article on the toilet of the caravan.

Once determined the type of caravana.que comes it is advisable:

1) Test the current caravan to 220 V (the home and campsites) and 12 v hooked the car . Check lights, turn signals, brakes, refrigerators and water pumps, plugs, lamps, gas burners, sinks .. All that can be connected and can fail.

To connect the car is necessary for your taking this prepared to feed inside the caravan .

If we put a down payment 7-pin socket most likely not be as it is the typical hitch trailers (need to take a positive from the battery to number hitch pin 2).

Make sure though it is normal that the mechanic has no idea if you are not familiar with the caravans. If the down payment is 13 poles we have no problem.

Then you need to consider the caravan may have outlet 7 (the former) or 13 (the most modern). Although there are some adapters they do not work well. Watch out.

2) Check that the floor, ceiling and walls are firm . That they are not too soft or squeak or unless they are rotten.

3) Open and close all windows . Check closures, obscuring and mosquito nets. Or also the skylights.

4) Up and down the legs. Surely we’ll have to grease them .

5) Check the tires but will have to change wheels. 100 euros dos.Recordad are the only two who sometimes endure a weight higher than the car changed. And who spends most of the year stop.

It is best done every two or three years. I do not change and I had a puncture with the caravan . Miraculously I was not cracked the ground.

6) It is recommended that has stabilizer . It is an adapter connected to the trailer hitch prevents you move your car with your swing. If you have nothing happens unless our car is lighter than the caravan. Then it will make us the most difficult driving.
