Discover the Center Pin fishing!

With the month of September which approaching sounds the arrival of autumn… Ahhhhh, autumn, probably the most beautiful season in Quebec: Indian summer, the amazing fall colors of maple leaves and which vary from soft yellow to Ruddy red. But it is also an extraordinary season for salmon fishing. Indeed, as most of the species say cold water, for them, the fall is synonymous with intense activity of food as and when water is cooled. It’s instinctive, rooted in their genes.

Center Pin Fishing Techniques1

They prepare their layer of fat that will allow them to survive in very cold water and spend the winter activity slowed and minimum period. Do not forget that fish are cold blooded animals, so they have a metabolic activity that will be important or slowed down depending on the temperature of the water. Thus, salmonids, cold-water species, have peaks of activity when the temperature of the water is their preferred temperature and these periods of extreme activity lie during the shoulder seasons (so spring and autumn). This also matches their period of spawning, the fish breeding. But right now, I’m really starting to digress from the subject… Although…

Center Pin Fishing Techniques2

I was saying, with the coming of the month of September, also comes the Chinook, Coho, brown trout and rainbow trout salmon runs of Steelhead strain in Lake Ontario tributaries to spawn (reproduce).During these runs, the best technique to capture these specimens remains, so far, the fishing technique to Centerpin (CP).

Center Pin Fishing Techniques3

So I wanted a little develop and explain this famous fishing technique to the Centerpin (CP) which seems to take its roots in Europe and more specifically England, ago long. This technique became popular first in British Colombia and now, for a few decades, also in Ontario in tributaries of Lake Ontario.

What is the Center Pin?

So, you say, but what is it that this CP? What is this technique? How does it work? You get LAWFAQS for further fishing tips!

First, a small summary of the technique that is simply to present natural baits (or the imitation of natural bait lures) to salmonids that date back in the River in the subtlest way as natural as possible. All reduced the technique at a presentation of a natural bait or a lure of imitation in perfect natural drift. It’s true but it’s simplistic and a lot easier said than done.

First, to use this technique and have consistent results, I think to have what I would call ‘a good sense of the water ‘. It’s not easy to explain, but basically, it’s know where stands the fish depending on water levels and the river Dynamics (common surface and bottom, grain, swirl, swirls, ditches and fast, etc.). These knowledge and experiences and understandings are essential to any fisherman River. They will allow him to “analyze” and understand a river and its fish simply by combining observations with his knowledge.

Second, equipment, always on the cutting edge of technology, plays a large role in the success and consistency of results. It is not for nothing that there is specific to this technical equipment. Long rods are more than recommended because they allow more “control” these derivatives. And reels which are precisely named Centerpin also play an essential role in the presentation of the offerings.Centerpin reels are jewels of accuracy and adjustment, machined ready millimetre, and mounted on bearings to performing ultra ball causing a minimum friction and a quasi-perpetuel movement of the reel.

But back to the canes, they do between 10 feet and 17 feet but they should also be quite soft (light medium light) because these fish are very fearful when they are in rivers. So the use of an invisible thread in the end diameter (fluorocarbon) water and therefore low resistance is necessary. To capture specimens from 10 to 25 pounds, it is imperative to use 12 lb test fluorocarbon maximum wire (and this little clear water, if the water is clear, there are still decrease the diameter of the wire up to 6 test books, personally, I do not go down below 6 pound test). Imagine a 15-pound monster that pull on your line, if you have a rigid rod, insured case. Thus, soft rods absorb shocks during the fighting and allow to fight specimens of large size without breaking the small diameter wire.

Once the equipment is acquired, there master it. Indeed, the long cane is often cumbersome and what Centerpin reel (which resembles a large reel of fly-fishing without Switchblade) who can get excited for no reason and cause of splendid tangles by oversteer of the reel and then, Hello the puzzle to unravel all of this! Thus the throws are also tame. There are currently 5 types: single loop, double loop, cast, cast and modified cast Wallace Wallace side. I will not dwell to describe them, they are very well explained in various videos available on Youtube by typing: ‘cast centerpin.

With respect to small equipment and editing. Here too, I’ll give you the basics but then you can adjust it depending on the size of the river that fish you and depth you want to reach. Basic, small equipment includes a main thread, a fleet (a CAP), weights (sinkers), one or two swivels, a wire of smaller diameter fluorocarbon leader and a hook of variable size depending on the bait you want to use.

The installation is very simple and is Lester your line properly so that your fleet is sensitive enough to discern the keys (fish attacks) but not too sensitive so it does not flow in strong currents. An important point that many fishermen to the careless Centerpin and which yet is essential to a good drift, a good presentation in the right area, it’s spacing of weights will vary based on your observations of the River (running fast and area little deep, running fast and deep area, running slow to surface and swirl in deep area”, etc…).

Well, I think have laid the groundwork for the technique, now have bait. Personally, I prefer the natural baits and lures imitating natural bait. So, I often use eggs of salmon and steelhead that are treated to be easily-preservable. But, it is possible to use worms, some moths, imitations of insects present in the River, imitations of small fish, etc… In my view, for the bait and lures, a good sense of the obeservation, a good knowledge of the river fishing and a good dose of imagination you will be able to make the findings of new baits and unusual lures that may well allow you to make other fishermen around you jealous. So, don’t be not conservative, let your imagination speak, it will be very certainly beneficial.

I hope that the explanation short of this technique will improve your sins. Unfortunately, you cannot just say or write everything on this technique. She is far too complex. It involves so much knowledge and experience it is impossible to summarize it simply, to live it and experience it. I invite you to contact me if you want to learn this technique and use it on large specimens of salmon and steelhead that date back to the rivers of Lake Ontario between September and may.
