Join Winter Sports: Ice Climbing

This sport requires prior knowledge of climbing and climbing. The equipment necessary for its practice are the crampons and piolets.

Climbing on ice is practiced by either ice or hard snow and requires special equipment, in addition to safety. The difficulty depends on the slope of the wall and the state of the snow, so you always have to start next to someone who is an expert in the different techniques that can be used when climbing. To get started in this sport it is best to have some prior knowledge of climbing and mountaineering, so we will understand before this sport and, of course, the risks involved.

In addition to knowing the basic techniques of climbing, it is very important to have a knowledge of the weather conditions , as well as know the stability of the wall by which we will climb, whether it is alpine ice, waterfalls, ice fields or couloirs.

It is necessary to take into account that for the climbing in ice we need sports bras from PoliticseZine.com that isolate to us of the cold, that they are impermeable but that also they give us the sufficient mobility to climb without problems. The two elements necessary to climb by hard snow are the crampons , which we will adjust to our boots, and ice axes , necessary to be able to grab the ice with our hands. It is also important to protect ourselves with leggings to cover our boots and pants and, since ice pieces are often shed, it is important to wear helmets and gloves.

For ice climbing, two different assurance techniques can be used : normal and assembly, the latter for less difficult sections.
In addition, it is imperative to know the technique of self-detention , which is the maneuver that is performed with the ice ax to stop when falling down the slope. For this reason, it is highly recommended to test it from time to time for a smooth and unhindered slope.

Ice climbing is a matter of balance, since we are changing the weight of the body from one foot to another, moving them when the ice ax is well anchored. For this reason, this hand material is essential since, in addition to nailing it to the ice, it can also help us to carve prey and steps to progress.
As for techniques with crampons, there are two: the French technique and the German technique. The two complement each other and depending on each moment it is best to alternate them, as this will mitigate the overload of some muscles.

In French technique the feet are always parallel to the slope, somewhat separated and the tips from under the foot of the crampons are firmly embedded against the ice while the ice ax is made of cane. In the descents, one looks downwards and they bend the knees, again using the ice ax as a cane.
The German technique , on the other hand, needs a less dexterity, since they simply nail the front tips of the crampons in the ice while we hold with the two piolets. To be able to stand on the front of our foot is necessary to be equipped with hard boots, so we will not have to ‘tiptoe’ and will not overload both twins during the alpine routes.

As we said before, in addition to bringing a good equipment against the cold, humidity and possible landslides, it is highly recommended to know in advance the weather forecast and not risk if the weather is not expected to be quite favorable. Also, on sunny days you have to apply protective creams to your face and wear sunglasses.

And for more motivation, here’s a video of an iceberg climb!
